This week’s song is about an unflattering topic, but a very human one.
How many people feel discouraged after spending too much time looking through others’ social media posts? Anyone? Although it’s nice to see that others are taking fabulous trips, eating delicious food in trendy restaurants and having grand adventures, sometimes it can make you feel bad if your life isn’t filled with incredible photo opportunities.
Sometimes it can go beyond feeling a little envious and can venture into “What have I done with my life?” territory if it leads you to wondering why you’re not able to afford to go to those beautiful places. What wrong decisions were made that led me to this current situation of not being able to afford those amazing experiences for my family?
It’s a pretty discouraging mindset to have, but sometimes it happens. That’s where my mind was when I wrote this week’s song, back in 2018. Fortunately things have turned around since then – and that doesn’t mean that I’m off yachting in the Caribbean this weekend, but I’m just feeling very grateful for what I do have and feel like I’m right where I’m meant to be. Living in the middle of a pandemic can do that to you.
Anyway, this week’s song is called “Wrong Turn” and it’s about what I described above, when you’re viewing somebody else’s lives in comparison to your own and you’re not feeling great about it.
We move in very different circles
You’re courtside, front-row seats
You’re shaking hands with the performers
I sing along in the balcony
Did I take a wrong turn along the way
A wrong turn from yesterday
Did I miss my chance, is it too late
Did I take a wrong turn
Or do I trust my fate?
We live very different lifestyles
You’re at a gala sipping champagne
I’m living paycheck to paycheck
Sipping water at a matinee
Did I take a wrong turn along the way
A wrong turn from yesterday
Did I miss my chance, is it too late
Did I take a wrong turn
Or do I trust my fate?
It’s so hard not to compare
Sometimes life doesn’t feel fair
Could it be that I am where I’m meant to be?
Did I take a wrong turn along the way
A wrong turn from yesterday
Did I miss my chance, is it too late
Did I take a wrong turn
Did I take a wrong turn
Did I take a wrong turn
Or do I trust my fate?
Although the song was originally written in 2018, I never posted it so I did a quick recording this week to post (and also rewrote the bridge and tweaked the chorus).
