Week #50: Your Secret

Mix together learning a new chord progression with inspiration from a storyline from a TV show and you get this week’s song.

Through taking the online Coursera class “Writing the Music,” an online class featuring videos by Berklee College of Music professor Scarlet Keys, I realized that I understand how to figure out chords better on piano and was thrilled to have a better inkling on how create chord progressions that I never figured out on guitar (except for the same basic ones that I used on the majority of my songs.)

In the TV show mentioned above, a woman broke off an affair with a married man because she felt that’s not who she really is and she was tired of being in a clandestine relationship. That concept fit in nicely with my newly learned chords in G minor and I wrote “Your Secret” on my keyboard.

I don’t wanna be a secret
I don’t wanna hide in the shadow of your life
I crave sunshine
I wanna go where you go and know who you know
I don’t wanna be your secret

When did life get so complicated?
Bringin’ on the drama I always hated
Love is meant to be celebrated
Not tossed aside for a convenient time

I don’t wanna be a secret
I don’t wanna hide in the shadow of your life
I crave sunshine
I wanna go where you go and know who you know
I don’t wanna be your secret

How did we get in this situation?
It can only end in heartbreak and frustration
There’s no room for negotiation
I didn’t know you had someone at home

I don’t wanna be a secret
I don’t wanna hide in the shadow of your life
I crave sunshine
I don’t wanna be, I don’t wanna be your secret
Don’t ask me, don’t ask me to keep it
I don’t wanna be, I don’t wanna be your secret
Not gonna be your secret.

Two more songs to go then the 52 Weeks in 2021 Project is complete!
