With 7.9 billion people in the world, you are bound to find a few who inspire you. This week’s song is about one who has inspired me.
It didn’t start as a source of inspiration, it was more of a childhood crush, but over the years, and in my adulthood, my admiration for this person grew and he has really inspired me, especially in my songwriting. In honor of his 72nd birthday coming up in a few days, this week’s song is “Star of the Show.”
My teenage walls were covered with posters of my favorite rock star and my 1982 diary included several mentions about him, such as when I watched him on a soap opera he was on, when I purchased one of his albums and when I dreamt of meeting him.
When I first saw you, I was nearly 13
I tore your picture from a magazine
I bought your records, watched you on TV
Met you in my dreams
Although he’s had an incredible impact on my life, he has no idea who I am, as I’m just one of his many fans.
Your life has left an imprint on mine
Though you may never know
I’m watching from the balcony
And you are the star of the show
After high school, he took a break from his career and I moved on to adulthood, putting my childhood crush behind me.
Life moves on, gets complicated
A teenage crush fades, feels outdated
Though when the radio played one of your songs,
I always sang along
Several years later, I rediscovered him – and all his music he released in the years in between – and continued to observe his career from afar, even attending a few shows.
Your life has left an imprint on mine
Though you may never know
I’m singing in the balcony
And you are the star of the show
Finally I made it closer to the stage and watched the show from the front row, which brought out my inner teen.
Years later, I made it to the front row
Stood right there at the edge of the stage
The view of you gave me a new perspective
I reconnected to my younger days
And so there you have it, my tribute to the “Star of the Show.”
Your life has left an imprint on mine
Though you may never know
I’m waving from the balcony
You’re still the star of the show
Yeah, you are the star of the show.
Can you guess who it is?
(Coincidentally, the # of the post is the age that my favorite rock star was when I was 13, the age I was the year I first became a fan.)
Should I guess? 😉
