Week 1: 365 Days

For my first post of the 52 Weeks in 2021 project, I thought I’d share a song I wrote on New Year’s Day 2019. This video is from that same year and was an entry for the Tiny Desk Contest. It’s about the optimism many of us have on the first day of the New Year and is literally how I spent New Year’s Day that year.

I spent New Year’s Day sorting socks, cleaning out dresser drawers
Watching the Taylor Swift Reputation tour
Dreaming big dreams about where to go from here
Big dreams for this brand new year

Three hundred sixty-five days of possibility
Three hundred sixty-five days to be a better me
I have a checklist of what I want to change
In the next three hundred sixty-five days

I spent the day in my PJs, clearing clutter off the desk
Singing to myself while conquering this mess
Dreaming big dreams about where we go from here
Big dreams for this brand new year

Three hundred sixty-five days of possibility
Three hundred sixty-five days to be a better me
I have a checklist of what I want to change
In the next three hundred sixty-five days

At the end of the day, I broke a resolution,
I lost my patience, threatened retribution, but that’s OK

I have three hundred sixty-four days to try again
Three hundred sixty-four days to make amends
I have a checklist of what I want to change
In the next three hundred sixty-four days.

  1. That’s one of your classic songs and so captures how we all feel at the start of a new year along with how we are beset by reality. We’re all happy and healthy and together so for me that makes a good year. I hope that you enter the tiny desk contest again.
